What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT) and skin needling, is a non-invasive procedure that utilizes microneedles to stimulate new collagen production. After the application of numbing cream, microneedles produce tiny punctures in the skin, causing micro-injuries. These micro-injuries trigger the wound healing cascade, causing the release of growth factors, neovascularization (development of new blood cells), and neocollagenesis (production of new collagen and elastin), which aid in repairing the texture and resiliency of the skin and mechanically breaking down scar tissue. Microneedling addresses minor skin concerns such as skin laxity, fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, stretch marks, and skin discolorations. It creates a more youthful, refreshed complexion without significant recovery time, as the epidermis is not destroyed by this process.

What to Expect on the Day of Microneedling

When you sit down for your micro-needling appointment, your session will begin with a numbing cream being applied to your face to avoid feeling as many needle pricks as possible. Once you begin to feel numb, the technician will use a pen-shaped or rolling tool with tiny needles around your face. The needles on the tool are used to make very tiny cuts into your skin, which can cause a bit of bleeding. Once the technician has made all of the passes to puncture your skin, they will wipe off any excess blood and apply a cream to the treated area to help with the healing and recovery process.

The whole micro-needling procedure can take between 15 – 30 minutes.

What is the downtime with this treatment?

Since Microneedling isn’t an invasive procedure, you will be able to leave our office as soon as your session is finished and return to work or school if you’re comfortable. You should be prepared to experience minor redness, shedding (peeling), and dry skin associated with your micro-needling treatment. These are all normal parts of the skin’s healing process and will resolve quickly. We recommend letting your skin heal before applying any makeup, but you should be able to at least apply light “camouflage” makeup after the first 24 – 48 hours to disguise the redness as it dissipates.

Since your new skin is developing and healing, it will also be more sensitive to the sun, so you should always apply sunscreen anytime you are planning on being outside, but even then, we recommended waiting a week before exposing your skin to sunlight and harsh chemicals.

To maintain the results of your treatment, you’ll need multiple sessions and perhaps other complementing treatments. The doctor will work with you to develop a plan of action based on your individual goals.
