What are Chemical Peels?

Frequently Asked Questions

VI Peel is a medium-depth chemical peel that penetrates your top layer of skin, called the epidermis, reaching into the dermis underneath. Like other chemical peels, a VI Peel works by exfoliating your skin and stimulating the production of new proteins. The procedure is commonly used to treat signs of aging, improve skin texture, and correct pigmentary issues.

The product used in VI Peels is made up of a blend of ingredients that include:

  • trichloroacetic acid (TCA) (10 to 12 percent)
  • phenol (10 to 12 percent)
  • salicylic acid (10 to 12 percent)
  • vitamin C (4 percent)
  • tretinoin (0.1 to 0.4 percent)

VI Peels are gentle enough that they can safely be used on your face, chest, eyelids, hands, and back. This type of peel can be used on all skin types and tones.

What are the benefits of a Chemical Peel?

In addition to improving areas of sun damage, a Chemical Peel can be used to help you in the following ways:

  • Improves the appearance of mild scars
  • Improves the look and feel of skin
  • Reduces age spots, freckles, and dark patches (melasma) due to pregnancy or taking birth control pills
  • Reduces the fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth
  • Treats certain types of acne
  • Treats wrinkles caused by sun damage and aging

The Best Candidates

Who are Chemical Peels For?

The best candidates for a Chemical Peel are typically fair-skinned and light-haired patients. For our patients with darker skin, you may also have good results, it will depend on the problem being treated, but you should be aware that you may be more likely to have an uneven skin tone following the procedure.

Unfortunately, a chemical peel isn’t for everyone. You may be told this treatment isn’t the best for you if you:

  • Are pregnant
  • Have frequent or severe outbreaks of cold sores
  • Have a personal or family history of ridged areas caused by an overgrowth of scar tissue (keloids)
  • Taken the oral acne medication isotretinoin for the past six months

Please keep in mind that bulges, sagging skin, and more severe wrinkles do not respond well to chemical peels. When you come in for your consultation, your technician will be able to help you decide if you’re a good candidate or not for a Chemical Peel.

What’s the first step?

If you are in the Frisco and Allen area of Texas and feel that a Chemical Peel could help you get the appearance you want, the first step is to contact our MedSpa and schedule your consultation with one of our fabulous technicians. During this appointment, you will be able to discuss your goals from the peel, ask questions about the procedure, and have your skin examined. Once the technician can understand your desires and needs, they will be able to make experienced recommendations on how you can achieve that appearance. If you agree with their evaluation, you can either get your Chemical Peel performed that day or schedule your session for a day that best fits your schedule.

What to Expect on the Day of a Chemical Peel

When you come into our boutique office for your Chemical Peel, your skin will first be thoroughly cleaned. Then, one or more chemical solutions will be applied to small areas of your skin. These chemicals may be glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, or carbolic acid (phenol), depending on the depth of your Chemical Peel. When applied, these chemicals create a controlled wound which leads to new skin being formed in the old skin’s place.

It is not uncommon that our patients to feel a burning sensation during their treatment, but it should only last about five to ten minutes, after which there will be a slight stinging sensation. The technician will offer you cool compresses to place on your skin to ease the stinging.

Chemical Peels Recovery

What is the downtime with this treatment?

This is a non-surgical, outpatient procedure so you can leave our office as soon as you are discharged. Although you will be able to drive yourself home, if this is your first Chemical Peel, you may want to get a family member or friend to give you a ride home.

During your recovery, you may have a similar reaction to getting a sunburn, which will involve some redness and possible scaling, but this should clear up within 3 to 7 days. You may need to wear bandages over the treated area for a few days to help the healing process. You should also avoid the sun for a few months as best as possible, but make sure that you wear good sunscreen if your do need to be outside. This practice will help you heal more effectively.

If you get a mild peel, it may be repeated every 1 – 4 weeks until you achieve the look you’re going for. Medium-depth peels can be repeated every 6 – 12 months if needed. The technician will be able to make suggestions on how many treatments you will need and when you should schedule your next session.

Medium-depth and deep peeling can result in swelling as well as blisters that may break, crust, turn brown, and peel off during the first few weeks of your recovery. If you have received a deeper Chemical Peel, you may need to take some over-the-counter pain medication during your recovery.

Jennifer is sweet, knowledgeable, and incredibly talented. She has been working on maintaining a balance on my face to ensure I age gracefully. I also started bringing my mother who had never had any neurotoxins and Jennifer was so informative/educational.
Jenn has been fantastic to provide a plan for helping turn back the clock and her treatments have been more effective than similar treatments I tried by other providers.
Jennifer was very professional, she gave me a detailed consultation and was articulate in her execution of our mutually agreed upon treatment plan.
