Microneedling with PRP, also known as a “vampire facial”, is a cosmetic procedure that uses your body’s platelet-rich plasma to improve skin elasticity, volume, and texture. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrate of platelet-rich plasma protein produced from blood. PRP has a large concentration of more than 20 growth factors, helping tissue to heal and repair, and treat all types of skin issues.

It involves drawing blood from your arm and then separating platelets in a machine called a centrifuge. When blood is placed into a centrifuge, it separates into three distinct layers: plasma on top, platelets and blood cells in the middle, and red blood cells at the bottom. PRP is derived from the center part, also known as the “serum portion”. Your PRP is then reintroduced to your skin through micro-needling, stimulating cell turnover, and in turn, collagen and elastin production for a plumper, tighter, and smoother complexion. Once the microneedling is completed, PRP is applied to your skin topically.

What to Expect on the Day of Microneedling + PRP

Microneedling with PRP is a very simple and effective procedure. On the day of your treatment, we will begin by being numbed using a local anesthetic to make your experience more comfortable. Next, after drawing a small amount of your blood with a small needle, your blood is placed in a centrifuge where it is spun at a very high speed to separate your red blood cells from the platelet-rich plasma and fibrin. We then take the plasma and fibrin and use them for the procedure.

Your skin is aerated through micro-needling, which creates microscopic holes or channels to allow the PRP to enter the skin, which is applied topically during the procedure. Once your skin absorbs most of the PRP, a final layer will be applied to the top layer of your skin that will be left on overnight.

What is the downtime with this treatment?

When you are all finished with your treatment, you will be able to return home the same day, however, you should allow yourself 1 – 3 days of recovery time. Your face will be very reddened and could even have a “blood-like” appearance because of the many microscopic holes. We highly recommend avoiding washing your face until the following day. It is also normal to notice some minor skin imperfections in the next few days, but you should be able to cover up with some basic makeup techniques.
